2017 RJS Fundraising Season Comes to a Successful Close

This past February, 14 Saint Stephen Council 14084 Volunteers closed out a highly successful 2016-2017 fundraising season at Raymond James Stadium with the final ‘official’ event - Monster Jam II.

This year we fielded a roster consisting of 46 volunteers, which included 41 Brother Knights, 1 family member, and 4 friends (non-Knights), who came together to experience the friendship among all of those selflessly donating their time and effort, working together to make possible the funds that help so many worthy causes in our Parish and throughout our greater community.

Thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven and some of his parishioners, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity.

The great basketball coach John Wooden once said, “The best competition I have is against myself to become better.” Over the course of the past two months Saint Stephens Catholic School has been well represented by young athletes trying to become better through the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Challenge.

On Feb 1st, 2017 members of the Color Corps from Monsignor John F Scully Assembly 3419 visited St. Stephen Catholic School for a Flag Folding Ceremony. Color Corp Commander S/K Shawn Ryan, S/K Mark Lovejoy PGK, S/K Ed Veronic and S/K Julio Alvarez PGK, FFN, FDD showed the children the proper way to fold the American Flag and explained what each of the 13 folds represents.

Throughout the school year students at Spoto High School are challenged to learn not just random facts, but the significance of events that occur in our society.  This is one of the primary responsibilities of the Social Sciences Dept.  Recently, several of Mr. Websters 11th Grade US History classes were given the challenge of creating propaganda posters for the 2016 Presidential Elections in order to help them recognize the importance of various types or propaganda and advertising in politics.

Susan is a National Gold Star Mother and resides in the Tampa Bay Florida area. An Army Veteran and the daughter of a Marine. She is also the Mother of a Fallen Marine Hero, Aaron M Kenefick, USMC. KIA 8 September 2009, Kunar Province Afghanistan.

Aaron will forever be tied to the two living Medal of Honor recipients Marine Sgt Dakota Meyer and Army Captain Will Swenson for their roles played out during the Ganjgal Ambush one of the largest tragic loses during the Afghanistan war.

Last year one of Marine Families Gold Star Mother's happened across a knitted blanket on FB that she fell in love with.  It was a beautiful American Flag.  We decided that she should have one so we set out to find a volunteer who could make the project happen.

WATSON, THERESA L., age 51, of Brandon, Florida, passed away Sunday evening December 13, 2015 at LifePath Melech House.  She was a graduate of John I. Leonard High School, a graduate of M.I.P. through the Church of God, and a Church Growth Consultant Level 1 graduate.  She attended Lee University.  She was a church administrator for 22 years and served as the North Knoxville District Women’s Ministry leader.  She was a member of the Church of God for 30 years. Preceded in death by parents, James Alton and Myrtle Wells Murphy. Survivors: husband of 29 years, Murice D. Watson; son, Murice Bradley Watson, Brandon, FL; daughter, Leah Nichole Watson, Cape Coral, FL; sister, Brenda Andrews, Madisonville; brother, James Murphy, Port St. Lucie, FL; several nieces and nephews.  Memorial service 6:00 p.m. Saturday, December 26, at Brandon Church of God.  Interment in Hiwassee Church of God Cemetery, Madisonville, TN.  Send memorial donations to Murice Watson, 603 Elaine Drive, Brandon, FL 33511.  Arrangements by Biereley-Hale Funeral Home, Madisonville, TN.

On Monday, November 9, 2015, Dennis Floto, Chief of Sun City Center Emergency Squad and Karen Ryan, Chief of Sun City Center Security Patrol received donations from the residents of Sun Towers Retirement Community. Funds for the generous donations were earned by the residents of Sun Towers through their time volunteering in their Country Store.
