I have been gone a few weeks, life got busy.  My bar, The Mulligan’s Pub, had its 1 year anniversary which was awesome.  To top it all off my little sister got married, been crazy.  It is going to get crazy, as I myself am less than 20 days from getting married.  You can always keep up with my thoughts on MMA by heading to Inside the Cage, LIVE MMA Radio on facebook or tuning into the radio show Friday nights from 6-8pm on 1010 AM or at www.thesportsexplosion.com.  Last week on air we had heavyweight fighter Dave “Pee Wee” Herman and got exclusive news that Jay Hieron has gotten out of his Strikeforce contract and is now negotiating with the UFC.  Now it is time to take a look at this week’s upcoming Strikeforce card and UFC 118.  Let’s get into it.

UFC 116 has come and gone, it was a great night of fights, and I cannot remember so many submissions on 1 card.  I was not able to get my predictions posted here in time, but I went 6-1 for the evening and got them up on my facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/profile.php?id=508029505&ref=ts).  Make sure to check out our good friend and sports radio host, Vinnie Munoz, over at http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Sports-Explosion/107566209264418?ref=ts&v=info#!/pages/The-Sports-Explosion/107566209264418?v=wall&ref=ts or at www.thesportsexplosion.com.  Vinnie is doing 8 hours of MMA radio this week, with former TUF Shane Primm stopping by.  Now to this past weekend’s action!!

Wow, life has had me so busy, I have so much to recap and still got to preview this weekend’s big event UFC 116 Lesnar vs Carwin, so let’s get into it.  Today we will do the recaps and I will hit you with my predictions right before the big fight.  In your spare time check out YouTube for some videos of fights from XFC heavyweight Chris Barnett.  Got some funny behind the scenes stuff, videos from some of his 4 pro fights, and matches never before seen in the gym between him and jiu jitsu ace and former UFC fighter Marcio Cruz.  Check out this link to Chris’s latest fight, where he breaks his opponent’s orbital bone, http://www.gofightlive.tv/playVideo.do?videoId=2744&resolution=High&playerSize=Large.

Before we get to UFC 114, here is something on a local guy.  Tampa based fighter Chris “Beast Boy” Barnett had his first fight outside the XFC.  It ended much like the rest, with an early stoppage victory for Barnett.  Barnett’s record now stands at 4-0 with an upcoming fight July 9th on the XFC 11 card The Next Generation.  He is once again scheduled to face veteran fight Jay White, the two were scheduled to face each other at XFC 10 but White had to back out.

I stopped by mmamania.com & sherdog .com the other morning and saw them ranting about a tweet from Alan Belcher about being underappreciated, basically.  I know who Alan is but really who is he in the scheme of MMA, especially to being calling out Anderson Silva & Vitor Belfort.  I decide that some statistical analysis was necessary.

It is a shame that so many people do not know about Bellator Fighting Championship.  They are shown on the Fox Sports Network & NBC weekly.  The format is a tournament style over a couple of months with some super fights mixed in.  They have some great fighters, including Hector Lombard.  The Cuban, Lombard, started  by competing in Judo, in 200 he represented his county in the Olympics. He has since added many skills to arsenal, his latest fight only lasting 6 seconds before he knocked out his opponent Jay Silva (trains with Rampage Jackson & a former UFC vet).  While yet to have a win over a big named opponent he has complied a record of 25-2-1 (13 tko/ko, 6 sub), his losses are to top opponents Gerad Mousasi & Akihiro Gono, with a draw to Kyle Noke a season 11 Ultimate Fighter show.  If you want good MMA, and for free, Bellator is the top option.

I know it is hard for some people to grasp but UFC is not the only MMA organization out there.  It is kind of like call all soda Coke, they may be the predominant organization when it comes to viewers and Pay Per View buys, but there are many other good products out there.   The UFC has crushed, but yet consumed most of their competition (PRIDE, WEC), that is one of the reasons I am not a fan of the UFC politics, management, & operations.  I will try to not let that influence my opinions of their events.  I much prefer to support a smaller local organization like the XFC or Art of Fighting.
