The past twenty four months have been phenomenal. We expanded our coverage into Brandon/Riverview. The franchise celebrated its thirty year anniversary while the Tampa Office celebrated its 5th year. We started a Caregiver Support Group in Westchase and began visiting 4-6 communities each month to provide entertainment to the residents (karaoke).

Local Girl Scout Troop And Hillsborough County Partner For “Paws Fur A Cause” E-mail

Apollo Beach (April 3, 2013) – Local Girl Scout Junior Troop 1950 in partnership with Hillsborough County will host “Paws Fur a Cause” to help raise public awareness for responsible pet ownership on May 4 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Girl Scouts will facilitate fun activities for pets and their owners including a one-mile walk/run, a field fetch and obstacle course contest, and a “furry fashion show.” Each activity will cost $5.00. There will also be activities for young children, and prizes and gifts will be awarded throughout the event. Proceeds will directly benefit Elmira’s Wildlife Sanctuary in Wimauma, FL.

Bandon Outreach Clinic welcomes our newest provider Ms. Ada Tapper, ARNP.  Ms.  Tapper joined the Outreach Clinic in October 2012 and volunteers her time very week to provide lifesaving,  free health care for the uninsured in our community.  Other new Medical Providers who joined the clinic this year are Dr. George Toth, Dr. David Kerns, and Mr. George Smith, ARNP. This has greatly increased our ability to see more patients. Our 200 plus volunteers donated more than 11,000 hours in 2012 and provided more than 7000 patient visits. They give the “Gift of a Healthy Life” not only during the holiday season but all year long.

This week we were treated to a lunch at a new restaurant, the Red Fork Cafe.  The Red Fork Café  opened a couple of weeks ago and serves Caribbean style food. The restaurant is quaint with small tables that creates an intimate environment. We met the owner and the server and sat down to try the cuisine.

-June 1970, A T (Red) Glass moved into Brandon from Houston, TX.
-Bought property out off South Bell Shoals Rd.
-Contractor Bill (Hutch) Craft sent Red to Brandon Rental to rent a generator to be used in rehab of late 1800"s "shotgun" cabin.
-That was the first time Red had been exposed to the concept of "rental".
-2 years later, Phil Tuvell, the current owner, died in a tragic accident while loading a small bulldozer.

BSAC's Blue Wave Swim Team at FLAGS E-mail

The Blue Wave Swim Team at the Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center ended the 2013 Short Course Season with significant accomplishments at FLAGS (Florida Age Group Championships) held in Orlando March 7-10, Senior Sectionals held in Ft. Lauderdale March 14-17, and NCSA Junior Nationals held in Orlando March 13-16, 2013. Most notably, at FLAGS the team was able to come in 16th out of 48 teams with individual points from Isabelle Bularca, Mariah Sawyer, Erin Schulte, Megan Strynar, Katie Vasiloff, Morgan Shinault, Connor Coronado, and Alonzo Biala. Morgan Shinault earned 2nd Place Overall for Girls 10 and Under competition.

They try to meet everyone’s needs by having a large selection of new gowns and dresses. But when the need arises, they can certainly order a special gown to meet someone’s desires.

Give Kids a Smile Event by Suncoast Community Health Centers E-mail

On Feb. 1st, 2013, Suncoast Community Health Centers was proud to host the Give Kids a Smile Event. Suncoast’s staff, along with volunteer dental professionals from our community, provided over $48,850.00 in donated preventive and restorative dental services to 46 children. Although the event was a huge success, it also draws attention to the great need to for children’s dental services in our community. Suncoast Community Health Centers is committed to improving access to dental care, especially preventive care, for all children in our community.

 

 
Lunch at the Trinity Café E-mail

This past Christmas Eve, I had the opportunity to serve lunch at the Trinity Café.  Some of you may be asking, why is that so special?  This lunch service was special because it was my opportunity to give back.

The Trinity Café is a place where the homeless and needy can come each weekday to receive a free meal, no questions asked.  The café is housed in the Salvation Army building on Florida Avenue in Tampa.

Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More of Valrico was opened by Gerald and Karen Ayers in August of 2011. They are originally from Idaho and moved to Florida to work with GTE. When they retired, they wanted to do something that wouold be fun and thus a T-Sirt printing company. But this is not your usual silk screen printing of large orders, but a more personal customizing oft- shirts for all occasions. Thus their usual order is for 1-100 shirts.

One of the Brandon Outreach Clinic Medical Volunteers, Steve Martin, P.A.,  was part of the volunteer Disaster Medical Assistant Team assisting with emergency medical help in Long Beach New York. He was deployed for 2 weeks. Working 12 hour shifts in a makeshift hospital set up on a soccer field.  Steve volunteers his time every Monday afternoon.

Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Brandon Present Check To Brandon Outreach Clinic E-mail

Members of the Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Brandon presented a $1200 check to the volunteers and staff of the Brandon Outreach Clinic. The proceeds were raised by auctioning off handmade quilts at their Quilt Show held in October.  The auction was originally planned by member Michele Soptei who passed away in June. Her enthusiasm and positive encouragement carried on through the months of show planning and spurred members to produce more than 20 quilted Works of art for auction.
